DiversityInc Noose Watch Update: Our Exclusive Map Tracks Racist Incidents Nationwide
Compiled by the DiversityInc staff
October 12, 2007
Within hours of launching the first national Noose Watch yesterday, DiversityInc was inundated with more than 20 reader responses alerting us to other noose incidents that have occurred across the country within the past year. We will continue to update our Noose Watch based on your responses and as more incidents occur.
From Pittsburgh, Pa., to Jacksonville, Fla., to Cincinnati, Ohio, to New London, Conn., DiversityInc readers alerted us to events that have not garnered the national media coverage of the Jena 6 or the ongoing investigation at Columbia University, where black professor Dr. Madonna Constantine discovered a noose hanging outside her door.
In the wake of Jena 6, copycat noose incidents have been occurring in growing numbers across the country, reports MSNBC.com. Among other incidents, the article reports nooses discovered at the University of Maryland in a tree near a building that houses several black campus groups in early September; the discovery of a noose on Sept. 29 in the locker room of the Hempstead, N.Y., police department, which touted its efforts to recruit blacks and Latinos; and a noose discovered on Oct. 2 seen hanging on a utility pole at the Anniston Army Depot in Alabama. There have since been others.
By updating our Noose Watch as incidents are reported, DiversityInc hopes to increase public awareness of this dangerous racist trend. If you know of a noose incident that has occurred within the last year, please e-mail editor@DiversityInc.com.
