Headlines this week: Rudy Giuliani Predicts 'Formidable' Clinton-Obama Team; John Edwards: Vote for Me Because I'm a White Man? Barack Obama: Obama Maneuver Boosts Civil-Rights Cred; Obama Campaign Targets Turnout for 17-Year-Olds; Obama Urges Arnold to OK College Aid for Undocumented Students

Each Wednesday, DiversityInc gives you a roundup of what top Democratic and Republican presidential nominees are doing, what they're saying, and issues of concern to you.

Rudy Giuliani Predicts 'Formidable' Clinton/Obama Team

Rudy Giuliani is already predicting that Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will team up to form the Democrats' White House ticket. "I believe she will be the nominee, and Sen. Obama will be the vice-presidential nominee," Giuliani said in remarks reported by The Washington Post. "That's the candidacy we are going to be facing, and that is a very formidable candidacy," says AFP.

John Edwards: Vote for Me Because I'm a White Man?

Did he actually say that? No. But Huffington Post blogger Francis L. Holland imagines that's what Edwards actually means when he receives e-mails from the Edwards campaign that read in part: "Can you imagine what it would be like to have a Democratic candidate who can compete and win anywhere in the country? A candidate who can connect with people in Columbus [Kentucky] and put states like Oklahoma in play?"

"Now, why would a man who's polling at 10 percent among Democrats nonetheless argue that he can put white Southern states in play?" asks Holland. "In fact, he's saying 'vote for me, because I'm a white man, and some places will only vote for a white man.' If that's not what he's saying then what IS he saying?" Read the post here.

Barack Obama: Obama Maneuver Boosts Civil-Rights Cred

Barack Obama's move to block a controversial nominee to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) could help the presidential candidate burnish his civil-rights bona fides and woo black voters away from Hillary Clinton.

Obama and Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., this week put a hold on Senate confirmation proceedings for FEC nominee Hans von Spakovsky, who has been accused of diluting minority voting power during his time as a Justice Department lawyer, says CBS News.

Obama Campaign Targets Turnout for 17-Year-Olds

The Obama campaign is actively cultivating teachers and high-school principals, using them for entrée to the youngest voters. It is one part of a strategy, along with appearing on the cover of youth-oriented publications such as Vibe Magazine and meeting with rappers such as Ludacris, that his campaign feels will be critical in his attempts to win the Iowa caucus, says The Wall Street Journal.

Obama Urges Arnold to OK College Aid for Undocumented Students

Obama is urging California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign legislation extending state financial aid to undocumented college students. The DREAM Act would allow undocumented-immigrant students who graduate from California high schools to apply for Cal Grant Loans, and community-college fee waivers.
