DiversityInc Writer's Guidelines

© DiversityInc 2007 ® All rights reserved. No article on this site can be reproduced by any means, print, electronic or any other, without prior written permission of the publisher.

Our publication is targeted to line managers, executives and professionals at large corporations who need valuable information quickly. They are passionate about diversity, and it is our publication's job to put solid information and advice in their hands to implement immediately.

Before contacting us:

Understand Who We Are: Our mission is to make the connection between diversity and the bottom line. Please do not contact us unless you have thoroughly read our web site and our magazine. If you can't pay to read it, we can't pay you to write about it. We suggest you start with the June issue, which subscribers access from this link: www.DiversityInc.com/Magazine.

What kind of stories we're interested in:

  • Diversity Management Best Practices: The centerpiece of what we do is the annual DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity® list. Read all about it—and who is on the list—before you query us. When featuring companies for their best practices, we only write about Top 50 Companies. We're not interested in publicity pieces from companies that are not measured by our process.

  • Personal Career Advice and Financial-Literacy Stories: A staple of our publication, we're always seeking fresh stories offering culturally competent advice.
Procedures for sending us story ideas:
  • Queries Vs. Finished Stories: Do not send us completed stories. Send us detailed queries/outlines explaining the premise, why this story works for DiversityInc, whom you would contact and why.

  • Administrative Details: Send queries and questions to editor@DiversityInc.com. Do NOT send attachments. Do not call us. We will try to respond to you quickly. If you don't hear from us within 30 days, you can resubmit your idea. Payment varies depending on the level of experience and the amount of work required.

  • Contract: Submitting anything in any format to DiversityInc does not constitute a contract or agreement.
Once you have an assignment:
  • Deadlines: We will give you strict deadlines for a formal outline, a final list of sources and the final story, plus dates for revisions. If you cannot meet these deadlines, notify us IMMEDIATELY.

  • Sources: Make sure you include advice from several sources. It's fine to use national experts, just cite their credentials and run them by us first. Do not use consultants whose goal in being in the story is to advertise for themselves. Corporate sources must work for companies in our Top 50.

  • Be Proactive: Offer constructive, practical solutions to problems.

  • Use Real Examples: Use real examples, with hard numbers, from companies.

  • Style: Please check out the DiversityInc style guide on our web site and adhere to all our style rules. For grammatical questions, use AP style.

  • Fact Checking: You must include contact information (phone and e-mail) and URLs for all sources so we can check your facts. This is your responsibility and you will not be paid if we do not receive this.

  • Invoices: You will not be paid until the article has been published. Send the invoice at that point, with your Social Security number, mailing address, phone number and e-mail, to Laura Hall at lhall@DiversityInc.com.
