Fred Thompson will announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination for president of the United States in 2008 on September 6, The Politico reports. This dispels concerns that recent campaign shakeups and time constraints would prevent the "Law and Order" actor and former Tennessee senator from throwing his hat into the ring.

It also ends speculation about a possible Giuliani/Thompson ticket, should the former New York mayor get the Republican presidential nomination.

Thompson will formally announce his presidential bid next Thursday by webcast, a campaign representative told supporters. Then he will embark on a tour of key swing states with early caucuses—Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and later, Florida—before returning to Tennessee.
