Republican Nominees Ignore Blacks, Says DNC

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is claiming Republican presidential candidates and the Republican National Committee (RNC) ignore people of color.

In a press release sent to media outlets Thursday, the DNC implied that major Republican presidential candidates claimed "scheduling conflicts" to avoid speaking to the National Urban League's annual conference in St. Louis and to avoid the National Council of La Raza (NCLR)'s annual conference in Miami Beach. Both organizations are national, nonpartisan advocates for people of color.

"Almost every Republican running for president has ducked major conferences of the NAACP, the National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO), the National Education Association (NEA), the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the Young Republicans National Convention, and even the College Republican Convention," said the DNC press release.

Presidential candidates Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas, and Rep. Duncan Hunter were the only two Republican candidates scheduled to speak at the Urban League's annual conference.

DiversityInc's calls to the RNC and to Republican frontrunners Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and John McCain, in addition to calls to Huckabee and Hunter, were not returned.

The DNC suggests that Republican presidential candidates not addressing national organizations of color is indicative of the party's ignorance of the issues that people of color face. As a result, people of color typically do not support the RNC, says the DNC press release.

Meanwhile Democratic presidential candidates have addressed several national organizations of color, says the DNC. All eight Democratic candidates accepted invitations to address the NAACP convention, seven addressed the NALEO convention, seven addressed the NEA, five are addressing the College Democrats of America convention this weekend, and four are addressing the National Urban League.

"The Republicans' snubs say as much about the future as they do about the past of the Republican party: If the Republicans' top candidates believe they can say 'no' to entire groups of Americans, then they'll find those Americans saying 'no' to them, too," said Democratic National Committee spokesperson Luis Miranda.

The following is a list of the national organizations of color and which Republican presidential candidate addressed the conference:

NAACP: Republican candidates were invited more than two months prior to the NAACP's July convention. Only Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) attended.

NALEO: Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) attended.

NEA: Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee attended.

NCLR: Huckabee and Hunter attended.
