Did D.L. Hughley Get a Free Pass? What Our Readers Said
By Aysha Hussain

D.L. said "ugly," that's in the eye of the beholder. Imus' statement referred to a characterization or lifestyle, and that's defamation. I don't need a law degree to see the difference.

While I am indeed a proponent of "free speech" I still live by the adage that you cannot yell "fire" in a crowded theater. Accordingly, I detest Hughley's remarks as well as his rationale for making them. I would wager any amount that he would not condone jokes about his mother or someone dear to him, or for another comedian to express how "ugly" his mother seems to be. That being my considered opinion of Hughley and his act, I refuse to subsidize any event in which he is featured and will write the sponsors of such events to voice my opinion or, as he says, to exercise my right of free speech.

Hughley did not get a "free pass." He blew it, it will hurt him. The fact that he is not apologizing is very sad. Just because he is a comedian does not give him the right to say hurtful things about those talent[ed] women. [Jay] Leno looked shocked and wanted to end that discussion fast. It is tough being a black man, now he does this to his self [sic]. Please know, not all people of African decent are giving him a free pass!
—Zandra R. Conway
What about "The View" on TV? One of the women said "nappy-headed hos" just to say it and nobody said anything to her. She has brown hair and it was not Rosie O'Donnell, it was not Barbara Walters.
