Why It's on the Top 50: Consolidated Edison has made the Top 50 list three of the last four years. The company is particularly strong in Human Capital and Supplier Diversity.
Description: Consolidated Edison distributes electricity throughout most of New York City.
From Chairman and CEO Kevin Burke:
"As a company, we recognize that we live in a region with one of the most ethnically and racially diverse populations in the world, and that we benefit from the wealth of skills, experiences and viewpoints that we draw from that mix." (To read more from Kevin Burke, see the Nov. 2006 issue of DiversityInc magazine)
Diversity Strengths: Consolidated Edison has unbiased retention in its work force and its management, meaning retention rates are level across race/ethnicity and gender. And the utility allocates 14 percents of its Tier I (contractor) procurement spending with minority- and women-owned suppliers, compared with a Top 50 average of 9.7 percent.
