No. 5: Ford Motor Company

Alan Mulally
President and CEO
Why It's on the Top 50: Ford is the one auto company that has been on the Top 50 list every year since it started. Its long-term commitment to diversity transcends economic upheavals and major downsizings. The company is very strong in all four areas measured--CEO Commitment, Human Capital, Corporate Communications and Supplier Diversity.

Description: One of the world's largest makers of cars and trucks. Its finance subsidiary, Ford Motor Credit, is the country's No. 1 auto-finance company.

From William Clay Ford Jr.: "We are as proud of our differences as we are of the values we share. Our diversity is essential to our mission. We need many unique skills, talents and ways of thinking and looking at the world to help us succeed."

Diversity Strengths: The company has both an internal diversity council, chaired by the CEO, and an external council, chaired by NAACP Chairman Julian Bond. Retention of managers is unbiased, meaning it is level across race/ethnicity and gender. Ford has extremely strong employee-resource groups (they meet regularly with the CEO; only 70 percent of Top 50 companies do this). One of its resource groups is for employees with disabilities, which only 55 percent of the Top 50 have.

Recent Diversity Success: In 2006, Ford launched a program called Leadership in DRIVE to help address issues around recruitment, retention and advancement of women.
