“Our business is diverse. Our customers are diverse,” Omar Ishrak says on Medtronic ’s website. “So we need to have a workplace that reflects the diversity of our customers and business. This also provides us an opportunity to have multiple varieties of ideas. Diversity breeds differences, and differences of opinion breed a better and more innovative business culture.”

Ishrak was named Chairman and CEO of Medtronic in 2011. He meets regularly with resource groups, chairs the diversity council and personally signs off on diversity goals.

Ishrak joined Medtronic from General Electric, where he spent 16 years and was President and CEO of GE Healthcare Systems. Earlier, he worked at Diasonics Vingmed (which was acquired by GE) and at Philips Ultrasound.

A native of Bangladesh, Ishrak received both a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from King’s College London. He sits on the board of trustees of Asia Society and on the Health Leadership Council of the Save the Children Foundation. He is also a member of Business Roundtable.
