WHY IT’S ON THE LIST
North ShoreLIJ appears on the Hospitals and Health Systems list for the second time. The hospital system, with 17 hospitals and nearly 400 ambulatory and physician practices in New York City and Long Island, has several pipeline programs to prepare students for careers in the health professions. These include the Korean Summer Scholars Internship program for high-school and college students, and the five-week Medical Scholars Pipeline program at the Hofstra North ShoreLIJ School of Medicine.
North ShoreLIJ’s Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Literacy has partnered with the Long Island GLBT Services Network to develop a comprehensive curriculum to educate employees on how to interact with LGBT patients in a culturally competent manner.
The hospital system also has strong outreach to veterans, and its VALOR (Veterans and Allies: Liaisons of Reintegration) employee resource group was North ShoreLIJ’s first. The group has a focus on hiring of veterans/transfer of skills to the workforce; fostering a community that ensures military families are welcomed; and even training Special Operations Pararescue jumpers with the skills they need to complete their combat missions.
