Spelman College Elects Campbell 10th President

Spelman College Board of Trustees has electedDr. Mary Schmidt Campbellas the 10th president of Spelman College. Dr. Campbell is dean emerita of the Tisch School of the Arts and university professor in the Department of Art and Public Policy at New York University.


Through a rigorous assessment process, members of thePresidential Search Committee (PSC) narrowed the pool of applicants and ultimately recommended Dr. Campbell as a finalist to visit campus. Following a successful campus visit and upon reviewing the feedback gathered from a community-wide online survey, the PSC made its recommendation to the Board of Trustees for final approval.

Dr. Campbell’s appointment is effective Aug. 1, 2015, following the completion of Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum’s13 years of outstanding leadership and service.

Since the beginning of Dr. Tatum’s tenure as president in 2002, Spelman College has been marked by a period of great innovation and growth. The college, long recognized as the leading educator of women of African descent, is now ranked among the top 100 liberal arts colleges in the nation and is one of the most selective women’s colleges in the U.S.

Overall, scholarship support for Spelman students has tripled since 2002, and opportunities for faculty research and development have expanded significantly. Strengthening the Core: The Strategic Plan for 2015, which focuses on global engagement, expanded opportunities for undergraduate research and internships, alumnae-student connections, leadership development and service learning linked to an increasingly interdisciplinary curriculum.

A highlight of Spelman College’s 11th Annual Leadership and Women of Color Conference, May 13-14 at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta, will be a tribute to Dr. Tatum, who will retire at the end of June. The conference will explore the theme “New School Leaders in the Digital Era.” Scheduled events also include the annual Game Changers: Digital Vanguard Luncheon and Legacy of Leadership Awards Dinner.
