This year’s most fashionable look at the Golden Globe Awards will not be from the runway.
Men and women attending the 75th Golden Globes will reportedly be wearing a simple black and white pin bearing the words “TIME’S UP.”
At the start of the new year, just several months after #MeToo took the nation by storm, more than 300 actresses, directors and writers signed on to the pledge to say, “The clock has run out on sexual assault, harassment and inequality in the workplace.”
Some of Hollywood’s most notable women are standing in solidarity with and providing legal support for working-class women.
Women involved with the initiative include actresses Reese Witherspoon, Kerry Washington, Emma Stone, Eva Longoria, Ashley Judd, America Ferrera, Rashida Jones and Natalie Portman, as well as Shonda Rhimes, executive producer on several successful television shows including the hit series “Scandal.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Witherspoon asked stylist Arianne Phillips to create the emblem’s look during a meeting to discuss Time’s Up.
“Reese asked me to come to the actors’ group, and told me they were going to be wearing black and would I consider creating a pin for the nominees and male presenters. We were up against the holidays, but I said I could do it, and the first person I called was my partner-in-crime, [Los Angeles jewelry designer] Michael Schmidt,” Phillips told the outlet.
Men and women walking the red carpet had previously reported they would be sporting all-black attire to the awards show as a silent protest against sexual assault.
According to Entertainment Weekly, “Multiple sources confirm to PEOPLE that many major actresses — including presenters and nominees (Jessica Chastain, Meryl Streep, and Emma Stone are among those nominated) — are planning to wear all-black looks as a symbol of protest against harassment in Hollywood. Sources say that this will start at the Golden Globes on Jan. 7, though it may extend throughout award season.”
Ilaria Urbinati, a celebrity stylist whose clients have included Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds, Will Forte, Nina Dobrev, Lizzy Caplan, Shailene Woodley and Donald Glover, took to Instagram to share this news in December.
“Jumanji” star Johnson commented on the post to share that he will be among the men wearing black.
“Yes we will,” he wrote.
In addition to lending support and a voice, Time’s Up also provides monetary and legal support through the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund. The Fund is working in partnership with the National Women’s Law Center.
The Golden Globe Awards will air this Sunday, Jan. 7 and will be hosted by Seth Meyers.
