Ex-South Carolina Cop Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison for Walter Scott’s Death

(Reuters) — A white former South Carolina policeman caught on video shooting Walter Scott, an unarmed Black man, in the back was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Thursday in a federal civil rights case connected to the 2015 killing.

Michael Slager, 36, pleaded guilty in May to using excessive force when he killed 50-year-old Walter Scott after a traffic stop in North Charleston. A bystander’s cellphone video of the shooting drew national attention to the case.
