Diversity Loses in College Football Coaching Jobs

As more colleges across the country are confronting racial tensions on their campuses, new statistics are coming to light regarding staff members, too. Of the 128 head coaches in the Football Bowl Subdivision, only 11 are Black — a dismal 8.6 percent.


The fact that the head coach population is overwhelmingly white is even more problematic because the coaches by no means represent the players they oversee: for the 2015 football season, 53.4 percent of the players were Black.

The number of Black head coaches has actually gotten worse; at the start of the 2012 season, 11.7 percent of them were Black. While it’s not comparable to the number of Black players, it was still higher than the current number and indicated a small step in the right direction.
