Abbott people care about doing the right thing,” Miles White wrote in the company’s Global Citizenship Report. “They want their company to help build the communities in which they live, to take care of the environment, to behave ethically and responsibly, to help those in need. They want their company to be a force for good in the world. I’m an Abbott person; I share those goals, and I try to lead with them in mind.”

White ties executive compensation to diversity results such as recruiting and retention. He also chairs the diversity council. Fifty percent of Abbott’s managers are involved in a mentoring program, and roughly two-thirds of the pairings are cross-cultural. White joined Abbott in 1984. He was named CEO in 1998 and Chairman in 1999.
