Why It’s on the List
Medtronic continues its rise in the DiversityInc Top 50. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Omar Ishrak is a visible diversity supporter. He meets with the company’s resource groups quarterly, and more than half of his direct reports sponsor groups. Ishrak chairs the executive diversity council, which meets quarterly and establishes and signs off on diversity goals and metrics. He personally picks executives to serve on the council. The company has a number of mentoring programs, including a Global Women’s Leadership Exchange, resource-group-related mentoring, Technical Peer Mentoring and Community Mentoring. The programs have cross-cultural components and formal follow-up. Medtronic has sponsors for high-potential employees from underrepresented groups, and all executives in the top three levels participate. Medtronic has strong resource groups, including a group for retirees. The groups are available to all employees, and more than a quarter of the workers participate. Its resource groups act as advisers in the design, development, deployment and/or facilitation of the company’s diversity training programs. Additionally, the resource groups offer cultural trainings to employees going on visits to their home countries and have offered language skills training as well. The company measures retention, business contributions and engagement of resource-group members versus nonmembers. |
