Bertolini is Aetna’s executive sponsor for diversity, ties executive compensation to diversity goals and participates in several resource groups. He is a strong advocate for people with disabilities; he was partially disabled after a spinal-cord injury in 2004. He is also passionate about reducing the cost of healthcare and educating patients about leading a healthy lifestyle (watch an interview with Bertolini and DiversityInc CEO Luke Visconti).

Bertolini joined Aetna in 2003 as head of the Specialty Products division. He went on to serve as Executive Vice President and head of Aetna’s regional businesses before being named President in 2007. He added the CEO title in November 2010 and the Chairman title five months later. Prior to joining Aetna, he worked at Cigna, NYLCare Health Plans and SelectCare, where he was President and CEO.

He is on the board of directors of the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp and the FIDELCO Guide Dog Foundation. In 2009, he became the first heterosexual person elected to the board of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, on which he still serves. In 2010, he received the Champion Award from Out & Equal Workplace Advocates.

Bertolini earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Wayne State University in Michigan and an MBA in finance from Cornell University.
