Why It’s on the List
In its first year participating, Lockheed Martin jumped onto the DiversityInc Top 50, becoming the third defense contractor on this list. Chairman and CEO Robert Stevens meets with the company’s resource groups every quarter. Executive compensation is linked to diversity metrics, and diversity goals are part of executive-performance reviews. Goals include executive sponsorship of a resource group, being a mentor, involvement with external organizations connected to diversity and retention/engagement in a person’s area of responsibility across racial/ethnic/gender demographics. More than 60 percent of its managers participate in formal, cross-cultural mentoring programs. The programs have formal follow-up and the top three levels of management participate. Mentoring relationships are evaluated on a yearly basis, and the benefits of participating in the mentoring programs are communicated internally. The company has more than 100 chapters of resource groups, including a veterans group, a religion group and a Middle Easterner group. The groups are company-wide and a senior executive is a member of each group. Groups are used for talent development, recruitment, mentoring and diversity training. Lockheed Martin’s diversity training is mandatory for all employees. Its targeted training includes New Employee Orientation, Effective Intercultural Relationships, Managing a Diverse Team, Managing Workforce Generations and Resource Group Leadership Training. Training is offered monthly, and there are metrics in place to assess the success of the trainings. |
