John Strangfeld is known for his commitment to the community and a passion for hiring veterans and helping them adjust to civilian life. “Strangfeld has spearheaded a remarkable effort to hire and successfully on-board veterans,” says DiversityInc.
“We have an opportunity collectively to have a big impact on veterans as they reenter society,” Strangfeld said when accepting DiversityInc’s Top Company for Community Development Award in 2011 (see video below). “This is not just the right thing to do—it’s a superb talent-acquisition strategy and it’s a superb way to create inclusion.”
Strangfeld and two-thirds of Prudential’s senior executives sit on the boards of multicultural nonprofits. He links executive compensation to diversity goals, meets with resource groups, chairs the firm’s diversity council and uses the company intranet to communicate a strong commitment to diversity. And the company’s robust philanthropic, volunteer and educational programs continue to revitalize Newark, N.J., where the company is based.
Prior to becoming CEO, Strangfeld served as Vice Chairman of Prudential’s U.S. businesses, including the Investment and Insurance divisions. He previously held a number of senior investment positions both in the U.S. and abroad. Strangfeld received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania and an MBA from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business.
Strangfeld is the chair of the board of trustees of Susquehanna and a trustee of the Darden School, where in 2005 he helped launch a recruitment and scholarship program for military officers. He is a vice chairman of the board of directors of The Geneva Association and a member of the board of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. Strangfeld also is a member of the Financial Services Forum.
