Why It’s on the List

Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC) understands the importance of a diverse workforce and management demographics and their relationship to reaching the marketplace and maintaining a sustainable health-insurance model. To that end, the company’s leadership reflects the market it serves, with five women, two Black people and one Latino person on its board of directors as well as President and CEO Pat Hemingway Hall. There are strong accountability measures in place for senior leaders. Diversity goals are part of executive-performance reviews, and 50 percent of the CEO’s direct reports’ bonuses are tied to diversity results.

HCSC has an interesting and effective diversity-management delivery model. The Enterprise Diversity and Inclusion Services initiative has five tiers, including the Executive Leadership Council, the Diversity & Inclusion Council, resource groups, business unit Diversity & Inclusion committees and coordinators, and Diversity & Inclusion facilitators, champions and ambassadors. This top-down model presents a fully integrated approach that includes the CEO as co-chair of the D&I council, trained volunteers serving as facilitators, former council members serving as ambassadors, and representation across business units.

Externally, HCSC’s impact is considerable. The company directs a third of its philanthropic spend to multicultural nonprofits and reports that 81 percent of its senior executives sit on boards of multicultural organizations. Additionally, HCSC’s direct spend with minority- and women-owned businesses is nearly 14 percent. The organization also sponsors national and local diversity conferences.
