Yeah, DADT was supposed to be a compromise with the Clinton admin to "protect" LGBT servicemen, but really, it just kept them closeted, fearful, and hiding their relationships/families for fear of being discharged. What kinda sense does that make for military morale? I'm glad this crap will be lifted soon.

I am not stating a position so please don't beat me up for being a homophobe, but I just hate it when people re-write history. DADT did not ban or prevent gays from joining or being in the military. It was a compromise with the Clinton administration to actually allow gays to serve without fear of being investigated or asked by superiors if they were gay. Before DODT a person suspected of being gay could be investigated and if proven to be gay they could be discharged. The policy does forbid gays from serving openly.

As a 20 year retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army, I am thrilled that we are lifting the shroud of shame that was created by DADT. I served during the Vietnam and Gulf Wars and my sexual orientation matter not a bit to the men and women I led. What mattered was my character and interest in their safety and the safety of the country. While I had to manage my difference often in secrecy, I am encouraged that my LGBT brothers and sisters won't have to hide who they are and can devote their efforts and energy to supporting and leading others.

Thank you President Obama, Members of the House and Senate and those who have worked hard to pass this law. I have worked side by side with gay and lesbian service members throughout my 30 year federal career. Each and every one has shown devotion to country, devotion to duty and to their fellow service member inspite of the prosecution and harashment put upon them by the "status quo". I know the currect service members will continue to struggle with bigotry and prejudism, however, I will be in their corner as they are not just gays and lesbians, but fellow Americans who deserve to have their devotion and service to the military recognized. Take the "labels" off and what do you have.....a human being. Being gay is only a very small part of what makes up a person's life. There's honestly, integrity, devotion to doing what is right. This is what I have seen. This is what is important.

Hurray! I'm not a lesbian, but I am glad that this new legislation is moving forward. About time. Who says that gay and lesbian members of the Armed Forces do not serve our country valiantly. Fantastic!

As an out lesbian woman, and a former member of the US Army for 8 years, I am incredibly encouraged by this long-overdue announcement. I would love to see this ban repealed so that lesbian and gay members can serve openly just as they are, and so that the US military does not lose these very valuable resources.
Thank you Obama! With each promise kept, you renew our hope for sweeping changes in helping LGBT people to acheive true equal rights.
