In its fourth year participating, WellPoint demonstrates the strong commitment of President and CEO Angela Braly and its emphasis on creating an inclusive and culturally competent work force to relate to its increasingly diverse customers.
Braly has been a strong advocate for diversity. She chairs the company's diversity council and meets regularly with the employee-resource groups. Six of the 17 board members and five of her 14 direct reports are women. Ten percent of the bonuses of her senior executives are tied to diversity results.

The company's work-force demographics reflect its increasing emphasis on culturally competent customer service. The work force is 26.1 Black and Latino, and new hires are 32 percent Black and Latino.

WellPoint has excellent work/life benefits, including new-parent transition week, a retiree medical spending account and an annual incentive plan. The company also has first-rate benefits for same-sex domestic partners of employees.

WellPoint has strong mandatory diversity training, including training aimed specifically at new hires and training with a multigenerational focus. The company has mandatory employee surveys that have a diversity component.

And the company gets a perfect score for how it communicates its diversity brand to the world on its corporate web site.

"We believe that a diverse work force is a key element in WellPoint's continued success as the nation's largest healthcare-benefits company. Difficult economic times often bring the benefits of this diversity into clearer focus as associates from different backgrounds with different life experiences can offer fresh perspectives on emerging challenges and opportunities."

David Casey, Vice President of Workplace Culture and Chief Diversity Officer

"Given today's tough economic environment, it is crucial now more than ever that we fully engage diverse and talented associates who are united by meaningful goals and enabled by their leadership to simplify the connection between health, care and value. We serve more than 35 million members across America who come from all walks of life--varied ethnicities, age groups, genders, socioeconomic statuses, physical and mental abilities, etc. As we strive to ensure that Americans have access to quality and affordable care, it's essential for us to recruit and retain a work force that is reflective of and in tune with the wide-ranging needs and rapidly changing demographics of our diverse customers."
