American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. With more than three million volunteers nationwide, the American Cancer Society is one of the oldest and largest voluntary health agencies in the United States.

Founded in 1913 and with national headquarters in Atlanta, the Society has 14 regional Divisions and local offices in 3,400 communities. The Illinois Division of the American Cancer Society funds cancer research to find a cure; provides education to prevent cancer and detect it early; advocates to enact laws that will impact cancer incidence and mortality; and provides community services that benefit everyone touched by cancer.

How the American Cancer Society Fights Cancer

Research
The American Cancer Society is the largest source of private, not-for-profit cancer research funds in the U.S., second only to the federal government in total dollars spent. Last year, the Society spent nearly $131 million in research. Since 1946, the Society has invested about $3 billion in cancer research, including $2 million annually in Illinois.

Education and Prevention
Knowing the facts about cancer can save lives. Primary cancer prevention means taking the necessary precautions to prevent the occurrence of cancer. The Society works to save lives and diminish suffering from cancer through community-based programs aimed at reducing the risk of cancer, detecting cancer as early as possible, ensuring proper treatment, and empowering people facing cancer to cope with the disease and maintain the highest possible quality of life. Society programs focus primarily on tobacco control; the relationship between diet, physical activity and cancer; and promoting coordinated community health.

Advocacy and Public Policy
Cancer is a political issue. Every day, government policymakers make decisions that affect the lives of nearly 10 million cancer patients, survivors, their families and all those at risk for developing cancer. To impact those decisions positively, the Society works to promote beneficial policies, laws and regulations for those affected by cancer.

Patient Navigation ServicesTM
No organization is better positioned than the American Cancer Society to help patients and their families work through the multi-faceted issues that make a cancer journey so challenging. Through Patient Navigation Services, the American Cancer Society provides a one stop, community-based information resource and service center where cancer patients, their families and friends can find help support and answers. In Illinois, in-person access to Patient Navigation Services is available at the Society’s headquarters or any of its 15 regional offices, or at the Comprehensive Navigation Centers and Patient Resource Centers located in health care facilities. The Society provides information on all aspects of cancer through a 24-hour information center (1.800.ACS.2345), Web site (www.cancer.org) and published materials.

Cornell University has been called "the first American university" — a distinguished private university with a broad public mission. It was founded in Ithaca, N.Y., in 1865 with a revolutionary aim: to educate students, without regard to race, gender, religion, or wealth, in a community where all forms of knowledge would be explored.

"I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study," declared Ezra Cornell. Asked in 1874 about the ramifications of admitting students of color, co-founder Andrew Dickson White declared, "if even one offered himself and passed the examinations, we should receive him even if all our five hundred students were to ask for dismissal on that account."

Today the influence and presence of Cornell University's remarkably farsighted founders extends to every corner of the campus and the world. Cornell remains inclusive and dynamic, bold and innovative, open and engaged, committed to diversity and inclusiveness in employment as well as education through:

  • Expansive benefit and workplace accommodations
  • Same-sex partner benefits
  • Innovative work/life balance policies
  • Programs that promote a safe and inclusive environment
  • Wide-ranging professional development opportunities

We celebrate differences, encourage dialogue, and inspire discovery. Come see for yourself.

If you have a body, you are an athlete

Bill Bowerman said this a couple of decades ago. The guy was right. It defines how he viewed the world, and it defines how Nike pursues its destiny. Ours is a language of sports, a universally understood lexicon of passion and competition. A lot has happened at Nike in the 33 years since we entered the industry, most of it good, some of it downright embarrassing. But through it all, we remain totally focused on creating performance opportunities for everyone who would benefit, and offering empowering messages for everyone who would listen.

We feel lucky to have a genuine, altruistic reason to be: the service of human potential. That's the great benefit of sports, and we're glad to be in the middle of it.

What started with a handshake between two running geeks in sleepy Eugene, Oregon, is now the world's most competitive sports and fitness company. The world headquarters is in Beaverton, Oregon. The Pacific Northwest is Nike's hometown, but like so many ambitious souls, we have expanded our horizons to every corner of the world. Nike employs approximately 24,300 people, and every one of them is significant to our mission of bringing inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world.

Along the way, Nike acquired some great companies that extend our reach within and beyond sports:

Cole Haan, based in Maine, sells dress and casual footwear and accessories for men and women under the brand names of Cole Haan, g Series and Bragano.

Nike Bauer Hockey, based in New Hampshire, manufactures and distributes hockey ice skates, apparel and equipment, as well as equipment for in-line skating, and street and roller hockey.

Hurley International, based in California, designs and distributes a line of action sports apparel for surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding, and youth lifestyle apparel and footwear.
Converse, based in Massachusetts, designs and distributes athletic and casual footwear, apparel and accessories.

Exeter Brands Group, based in New York, is devoted to designing and marketing athletic footwear and apparel for the value retail channel.

As small as we feel, the Nike family is a fairly vast enterprise. We operate on six continents. Our suppliers, shippers, retailers and service providers employ close to 1 million people. The diversity inherent in such size is helping Nike evolve its role as a global company. We see a bigger picture today than when we started, one that includes building sustainable business with sound labor practices. We retain the zeal of youth yet act on our responsibilities as a global corporate citizen.

If you have a body, you are an athlete. And as long as there are athletes, there will be Nike.
