I was recruiting for a company filling entry level positions. One of the minimum requirements of employment there was that all applicants be available to work seven days a week to accommodate customers and the needs of the business. I had spoken to several applicants and reiterated this. Word got back to me that they were members of one of the higher-up's church. I was told I needed to make an exception as a result. When I said that was not fair to others (myself included) who had to be available as stated, someone else hired them in my place. I left that company a few months later for this among other reasons.

You need to LEAVE NOW if you can.

Management has WARNED YOU--NO EMPLOYEES OF COLOR WILL BE ALLOWED TO ADVANCE TO UPPER ECHELONS OF MANAGEMENT.

Take it from someone who has “been there” and experienced all these things. I am an African-American Christian female who has “walked in your shoes.” People who have not experienced subtle and blatant employment disrcrimination HAVE NO IDEA HOW FAR MANAGEMENT WILL GO TO HARASS PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYEES OF COLOR. MANAGEMENT IS RUTHLESS AND WILL NOT STOP UNTIL THEY “DRIVE OUT” WHOEVER THEY DON’T WANT.

REMEMBER THAT “GOOD JOB PERFORMANCE” DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE EMPLOYEE WILL BE TREATED FAIRLY BY MANAGEMENT. The myth of “merit”–-something we have all been taught is important in the American workplace–-does not help us to CONFRONT THE REALITY OF UNFAIR EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION BASED UPON COLOR, ETHNICIY, GENDER OR RELIGION.

Your husband needs to know that he did not “bring this on himself”–-nor did the other Indian professionals at his job merit unfair/discriminatory treatment. KNOWING THIS GIVES THE EMPLOYEE A PSYCHOLOGICAL EDGE AND ENABLES HER/HIM TO FACE A HOSTILE WORK CLIMATE.

Your husband should do things he enjoys OUTSIDE the workplace to maintain his sense of sanity and RELIEVE STRESS BROUGHT ON BY A HOSTILE WORKPLACE.
